The movie is set in the fictional village of Solaiyur and revolves around a dam which is the lifeline for the village. The dam is under assessment for structural integrity by the Public Works Department. The local minister has corrupt intentions and wants to make money through a new dam project. The villagers want to perform a special Pooja to pray to the God Shiva. They decide to invite the grandson of Maharaja Lingeswaran who commissioned the dam and the temple. They believe the return of the line of the Maharaja will solve the problems surrounding the dam. Lingaa (played by Rajinikanth in contemporary time) is the grandson of Maharaja Lingeswaran. His family has fallen on hard times and he is now a petty thief in the city. He is angry with his grandfather for squandering away the family fortune so he is unwilling to go to Solaiyur to preside over the temple function. However, circumstances force him to accept the invitation and travel to Solaiyur. Through a flashback sequence, Lingaa comes to know that his grandfather, Lingeswaran (also played by Rajinikanth, set in 1939) was an altruist. Lingeswaran had spent his entire fortune to build the dam against all odds during the British Raj. But the people of Solaiyur had mistaken his intentions which forced him to leave Solaiyur and move to the city. Lingaa repents his ways and understands the great sacrifices made by his grandfather for the public good. Kamal gets a job and returns to the village with a wife Mona (Shyama), who is considered too modern for the village. When Kamal returns to the city, he stops sending money to his family. The mother and daughter leave for the city when they are informed that Kamal is not well. They are treated badly by Mona, who with her spendthrift habits gets into arguments with Kamal. When Kamal leaves for a job outside the city, Mona has Shanta and Sharda thrown out of the house.\n\nWandering on the streets, Shanta and Sharda collide with Kumar's (Manoj Kumar) car, who takes them to his home. Kamal is an employee of Kumar, but the fact is unknown to mother and daughter. Kumar and Sharda start liking each other and he insists that they stay at his place till the mother recovers. When Kamal returns home, he is upset to see his mother and sister missing. He leaves some money he is carrying for his employer with Mona, and goes off to the village to look for them, but is unable to find them. Mona spends three-fourths of the money Kamal had left in her care, and he has to find a way to return the money. Finally, Kamal unites with his mother and sister; Mona has learned her lesson from her errant ways, and Kumar and Sharda get married.\n\nThere is a sub-plot in the form of Kamal and Mona's neighbours; one is Sunder (Mehmood) and his wife Geeta (Savitri), who is shown as the traditional wife in comparison to Mona.
