Badshah Babar arrives in India from Iran, drives out Ibrahim Lodhi, makes peace with the Hindus and rules Delhi. He also adopts Rajkumari as his daughter and treats like his very own child, even though he has two sons, Humayun and Kamran, and a daughter, Gulbadan. Babar also finds out that Rajkumari is soon to be married to Randhir, the Rajkumar of Chanderi, who is out to avenge the conquest of his native land, by killing Humayun. Before that could happen Humayun falls seriously ill, Babar prays for his survival, but himself becomes ill and passes away, leaving Humayun to recuperate and be crowned the next Badshah. Humayun meets Hamida Bano and both fall in love with each other so much so that he loses all interest in the running of the state. When Delhi is attacked by Jai Singh, Kamran and Khan Bahadur join in the attack, forcing Hamida to flee. Humayun fends off the attackers but must re-route his armies when Rajkumari is taken, hostage.

The film is set against the backdrop of the first communist Ministry of Kerala on the eve of its dismissal in 1959 after less than two years in power. A school going teenage, Jayan, grows warm relation with Bhasi, the tailor, who is a staunch Communist Party activist. Jayan's father is a strong sympathizer of Congress party. Jayan with knowledge dawning upon him realize how Bhasi and his near and dear ones live on the verge of fear of being annihilated by the henchmen of Congress and upper castes who seem to usurp power by unsure means and violence. Jayan's intimate rapport with Dr. Tharakan, a scientist of sorts, engaged in the theory of impending doomsday, helps him see things clearly. Jayan realizes the truth besmeared by blood, murder, and revenge.

Banda Singh went on to fight many battles across Punjab and brought about reforms such as the abolition of the Zamindari system, freedom of religion and other humanitarian measures, even as he managed to establish Khalsa rule in the state. Banda Singh Bahadur had to fight the Mughals relentlessly and finally, Mughal Emperor Farrukhsiyar managed to defeat him with his unlimited resources. But Banda Singh Bahadur refused to turn tail and escape and gave himself up along with his men like a true soldier.
