Murugesh (Murali) also known as Murugan, a musician, comes with his troupe in a village. The village belle Chellakili (Sivaranjani) waits for her lover Murugan who was missing while her cousin Duraipandi (G. M. Sundar), a brute, wants to marry her. In the past, Chellakili's father (Vijayakumar) wanted to marry his daughter with the family friend and orphan Murugan. Whereas Yasodai (C. R. Saraswathi), Chellakili's aunt, wanted to marry Chellakili with Duraipandi. She managed to beat Murugan and she expelled him from the village. Later, Murugan became a singer in a music band but he cannot forget Chellakili. Duraipandi and Yasodai are now aware of Murugan's return. They then reveal Chellakili's love affair to her father without disclosing Murugesh's real identity. Her family then meet the Sadha Swamy who causes Chellakili to forget her love. Babu and Malik are two inseparable friends who live in a small town in India. One day they decide to play a prank and steal something but get caught. While Malik's dad came to bail out and stand as surety for him, Babu has no one to do so and ends up in the juvenile center. When the two grow up, Malik becomes a Police Inspector, while Babu takes to crime and ends up in jail. When he is released from the jail, he goes to meet his partner-in-crime, Bali, and together they start planning the next heist. Malik meets Babu and tells him to straighten his ways. But Babu had already tried that and ended up being falsely accused of stealing a necklace belonging to his employer's wife. Nevertheless, Babu does inform Bali that he will not be taking part in any crime. Thereafter, Bali and his men are arrested and they blame Babu for ratting on them. Bali is released on bail. When Babu meets him, an argument ensues leading to a fight and Bali is killed. A fearful Babu flees Bombay and lands up in Jogendra Nagar in Northern India, where he meets a man named Bhagat who asks him to masquerade as Kundan, the sole heir of a wealthy man named Shahji. Babu becomes Kundan and makes his way into the hearts of Shahji, his wife Rukmani and daughter Maya. Babu gets enough cash to pay off Bhagat in small installments but Bhagat becomes greedy and wants Babu to steal all the cash and jewellery and abscond. Babu is reluctant to steal from the kind people. To make matters worse, he has fallen in love with Maya - apparently his 'sister'. Ram Singh (or Ramu) (Dev Anand) is a good school boy. One day he brings a penknife which his classmate has forgotten. He shows it to his mother. When he says that it has to be returned next day his mother says it need not be returned and uses it.This spoils Ramu and he starts stealing petty things and his mother protects him. His uncle Shankar warns his mother that her pampering and encouragement is the Dushman for the son and one day he will be a big thief. This protection encourages him to become a thief. He becomes Dakhu Ram Singh. Police are after him and in the process, he has to leave the city and go to another city to escape the police. In the train, he steals and he gets an accomplice in Charodimal ( Radha Kishen). In the new city, he sees a girl Shiela (Usha Kiron)won the swing and cuts the swing and Shiela fall in the river. He pretends to save her and takes her necklace. They he comes to know that her brother is the CID inspector who is after him. So he entices her and marries and starts to continue his profession of stealing. His true identity is found by the Inspector who tries to arrest him. Shiela who is pregnant comes to save him and faints. The Inspector comes to attend fainted Shiela and Ram Singh escapes. She delivers a son. Ram Singh comes to see the son and Shiela leaves him. Laxmikant Kabadiya aka LK (Anupam Kher) is one of India's richest industrialists. Unfortunately for all of them on the night before the IPO opens, LK dies. The family is distraught and horrified as now no one will buy their shares. So, on the advice of their family guru, the family decides to hide the death of LK for a period of two days until the shares are all sold out. However, to make matters worse, every time they're ready to announce LK's death, fate intervenes forcing them to keep his death hidden for another couple of days.
