Ram Singh (or Ramu) (Dev Anand) is a good school boy. One day he brings a penknife which his classmate has forgotten. He shows it to his mother. When he says that it has to be returned next day his mother says it need not be returned and uses it.This spoils Ramu and he starts stealing petty things and his mother protects him. His uncle Shankar warns his mother that her pampering and encouragement is the Dushman for the son and one day he will be a big thief. This protection encourages him to become a thief. He becomes Dakhu Ram Singh. Police are after him and in the process, he has to leave the city and go to another city to escape the police. In the train, he steals and he gets an accomplice in Charodimal ( Radha Kishen). In the new city, he sees a girl Shiela (Usha Kiron)won the swing and cuts the swing and Shiela fall in the river. He pretends to save her and takes her necklace. They he comes to know that her brother is the CID inspector who is after him. So he entices her and marries and starts to continue his profession of stealing. His true identity is found by the Inspector who tries to arrest him. Shiela who is pregnant comes to save him and faints. The Inspector comes to attend fainted Shiela and Ram Singh escapes. She delivers a son. Ram Singh comes to see the son and Shiela leaves him. Deva and Shruti study in the same college and they soon fall in love. One day, Deva comes across his friend Ashok who invites him home. He then introduces Deva to his sister Indu who is hot-headed sister but has a beautiful voice. Deva is impressed and hopes she could sing for his band. He tries to befriend her but Indu misunderstands his advances for eve-teasing and gets him arrested. Deva is locked up and thrashed by the police which angers Shruti, who rushes to Indu s house and yells at her for getting Deva arrested. Ashok then reveals the reason behind Indu s behavior and narrates the hideous incident that ruined her life while she was on a trip. Deva decides to bring back happiness in Indu s life by making her favorite singer visit her. Indu s is ecstatic to meet her role model. She also apologizes to Deva and Shruti for her behavior. Soon, Deva and Shruti announce their engagement and Deva invites his friend Ranjith for the ceremony. Thrilled to introduce his to-be wife to his old friend, Deva doesn t realize that he ends up introducing Indu instead of Shruti. Ranjith is shocked. He then congratulates Deva for being such a brave man and marrying the same girl he raped. Deva is shocked as he does not recollect any such incidence. The story begins with Mangalasherry Neelakantan's (Mohanlal) son Karthikeyan (Mohanlal), as he ventures out to make money which ultimately makes him a liquor baron. The relationship between Neelakantan and Karthikeyan deteriorates, as the father does not approve of his son's money-making methods. Mundakkal Shekharan (Napoleon) comes into the picture again after spending a term in prison for killing one of Neelakantan's friends. He decides to finish the Mangalasherry family by confiscating the house which was kept as collateral for Bhanumathi's (Revathy) treatment. Bhanumathi passes away and Karthikeyan is now bent on taking revenge.\nNeelakantan loses his home and Karthikeyan ventures out in an attempt to reclaim his ancestral home. In the meantime, Karthikeyan abducts Shekharan's daughter Janaki (Vasundhara Das) in an attempt to blackmail him (Shekharan), during which they fall in love with each other. The remainder of the movie is about how Karthikeyan manages to get his ancestral home back while Shekharan's nephew Mundakkal Rajendran (Vijayaraghavan) makes attempts to kill Karthikeyan, but instead kills Neelakantan by lighting him on fire and gets killed by Neelakantan after a knife throw which decapitates Rajendran. Karthikeyan, now infuriated, goes to kill Shekaran by burning him. But Warrier stops him and brings him back.
