Deva and Shruti study in the same college and they soon fall in love. One day, Deva comes across his friend Ashok who invites him home. He then introduces Deva to his sister Indu who is hot-headed sister but has a beautiful voice. Deva is impressed and hopes she could sing for his band. He tries to befriend her but Indu misunderstands his advances for eve-teasing and gets him arrested. Deva is locked up and thrashed by the police which angers Shruti, who rushes to Indu s house and yells at her for getting Deva arrested. Ashok then reveals the reason behind Indu s behavior and narrates the hideous incident that ruined her life while she was on a trip. Deva decides to bring back happiness in Indu s life by making her favorite singer visit her. Indu s is ecstatic to meet her role model. She also apologizes to Deva and Shruti for her behavior. Soon, Deva and Shruti announce their engagement and Deva invites his friend Ranjith for the ceremony. Thrilled to introduce his to-be wife to his old friend, Deva doesn t realize that he ends up introducing Indu instead of Shruti. Ranjith is shocked. He then congratulates Deva for being such a brave man and marrying the same girl he raped. Deva is shocked as he does not recollect any such incidence. Ram Singh (or Ramu) (Dev Anand) is a good school boy. One day he brings a penknife which his classmate has forgotten. He shows it to his mother. He becomes Dakhu Ram Singh. Police are after him and in the process, he has to leave the city and go to another city to escape the police. In the train, he steals and he gets an accomplice in Charodimal ( Radha Kishen). In the new city, he sees a girl Shiela (Usha Kiron)won the swing and cuts the swing and Shiela fall in the river. He pretends to save her and takes her necklace. They he comes to know that her brother is the CID inspector who is after him. So he entices her and marries and starts to continue his profession of stealing. His true identity is found by the Inspector who tries to arrest him. Shiela who is pregnant comes to save him and faints. The Inspector comes to attend fainted Shiela and Ram Singh escapes. She delivers a son. Ram Singh comes to see the son and Shiela leaves him. Babu and Malik are two inseparable friends who live in a small town in India. One day they decide to play a prank and steal something but get caught. While Malik's dad came to bail out and stand as surety for him, Babu has no one to do so and ends up in the juvenile center. When the two grow up, Malik becomes a Police Inspector, while Babu takes to crime and ends up in jail. When he is released from the jail, he goes to meet his partner-in-crime, Bali, and together they start planning the next heist. Malik meets Babu and tells him to straighten his ways. But Babu had already tried that and ended up being falsely accused of stealing a necklace belonging to his employer's wife. Nevertheless, Babu does inform Bali that he will not be taking part in any crime. Thereafter, Bali and his men are arrested and they blame Babu for ratting on them. Bali is released on bail. When Babu meets him, an argument ensues leading to a fight and Bali is killed. A fearful Babu flees Bombay and lands up in Jogendra Nagar in Northern India, where he meets a man named Bhagat who asks him to masquerade as Kundan, the sole heir of a wealthy man named Shahji. Babu becomes Kundan and makes his way into the hearts of Shahji, his wife Rukmani and daughter Maya. Babu gets enough cash to pay off Bhagat in small installments but Bhagat becomes greedy and wants Babu to steal all the cash and jewellery and abscond. Babu is reluctant to steal from the kind people. To make matters worse, he has fallen in love with Maya - apparently his 'sister'.
