Yogendra (Mohan Babu) is the son of Panduranga Rao (Vijayakumar), a High Court judge who got first rank in civil services examinations. Dunnapothula Janardhan Rao (Narra Venkateswara Rao), a politician, falsely implicates Yogi in a murder case to take revenge on Panduranga, who had earlier given a jail sentence to him in a corruption case. Panduranga gives the judgment to his Yogi by jailing him for six years. After six years, Janardhan dies on the day Yogi is released from jail. Dunnapothula Dharma Rao (Mukesh Rishi), Janardhan's son, visits the shores of Godavari River to leave the ashes. Yogi foils the rites by resisting, then Dharma challenges Yogi that he is going to mix his father's ashes in the Godavari before Yogi mixes the ashes of his father, who is still alive, one day. Meanwhile, Yogi falls in love with a beautiful girl Anuradha (Preeti Jhangiani), the strong-willed and independent-minded daughter of Kasi Visweswara Rao (Raghunatha Reddy), Dharma's henchman. Suddenly, there is an appearance of Thulasi (Seema), who claims to be Panduranga's daughter. Panduranga refuses the claim and banishes her. Forced by circumstances and at the instigation and help of Dharma, she comes out open with the parentage claim. Yogi thrashes the protesters, but upon knowing the truth from his uncle Gnaneswara Rao (Kota Srinivasa Rao), he accepts the task of her protection in the capacity as an elder brother. Yogi decides to marry Thulasi to his good friend (Brahmaji), and he also prods his father to acknowledge the parentage of Thulasi. Panduranga confesses to Thulasi. The next morning when Yogi returns home, Thulasi is found dead. Panduranga is accused of murdering her. However, the whole act was planned by Dharma. After killing Thulasi, he forced Satya Murthy (Suthi Velu), Panduranga's servant, to testify against Panduranga in court. In court, Jagan (Nagarjuna Akkineni), a close friend of Yogi and famous leading criminal lawyer, appears as the defense council by canceling his marriage with his girlfriend (Soundarya) and wins the case to lay bare the murder plot and hidden intentions of the baddies. Finally, Panduranga is judged innocent of the crime. After that, Yogi returns to his father, who shows remorse for all his actions, including not believing in his son's innocence, and he dies at his feet. At Panduranga s funeral, Dharma arrives to poke fun at Yogi and carry out the postponed last rituals of his own father. "Srinivas (Venkatesh) an educated unemployed guy and his sister Lakshmi (Varalakshmi) lost their parents in childhood for saving a landlord Sridhar Rao (Vankayala) and stay with their uncle Nagayah (Suthi Velu) who is a chronic drinker, takes out all money given by Sridhar Rao and sells them. Srinivas's cousin Saroja (Gouthami), daughter of Nagayah helps them to get away from that place and she stays back. They are adopted by a couple (Gollapudi Maruthi Rao & Y.Vijaya) in the city. Srinivas does all kinds of jobs like newspaper delivery boy, auto driver and runs a dance school, where he gets introduced to Lalitha (Bhanupriya) who will be looking for a job staying at her sister's (Anitha) house and her brother-in-law Yenimdakula Venkatrao (Prasad Babu) who is a bad person. Srinivas gives Lalitha a job in his dance school and both of them fall in love. Meanwhile, Saroja changes her name to Swapna and comes to rent in Srinivas house not knowing that he's her cousin. Bokka Lambodharam (Mohan Babu) proprietor of a 5 Star hotel, is a big womanizer. Incidentally, Srinivas uncle Nagayah works as an assistant to him as Nisachara. He sees Lalitha in a dance program and is attracted to her. After a few days, Swapna knows the truth which restarts her childhood love with Srinivas. At the same time, Bokka Lambodharam traps Lalitha's brother-in-law Venkatrao to get her. To protect her, Srinivas brings her home and tells her that he wants to marry her. After listening to that Swapna sacrifices her love, while they are making marriage arrangements Lalitha also knows the truth so decides to go away by accompanying Swapna with Srinivas. She takes help of Bokka Lambodharam to stop the marriage, he agrees to that if she accepts his condition. Meanwhile, Swapna listens to everything and goes in place of Lalitha. Now Lalitha reveals the truth to Srinivas that Swapna is only Saroja, even Nagayah also recognizes his daughter. Srinivas goes and protects Swapna. The movie is set in the fictional village of Solaiyur and revolves around a dam which is the lifeline for the village. The dam is under assessment for structural integrity by the Public Works Department. The local minister has corrupt intentions and wants to make money through a new dam project. The villagers want to perform a special Pooja to pray to the God Shiva. They decide to invite the grandson of Maharaja Lingeswaran who commissioned the dam and the temple. They believe the return of the line of the Maharaja will solve the problems surrounding the dam. Lingaa (played by Rajinikanth in contemporary time) is the grandson of Maharaja Lingeswaran. His family has fallen on hard times and he is now a petty thief in the city. He is angry with his grandfather for squandering away the family fortune so he is unwilling to go to Solaiyur to preside over the temple function. However, circumstances force him to accept the invitation and travel to Solaiyur. Through a flashback sequence, Lingaa comes to know that his grandfather, Lingeswaran (also played by Rajinikanth, set in 1939) was an altruist. Lingeswaran had spent his entire fortune to build the dam against all odds during the British Raj. But the people of Solaiyur had mistaken his intentions which forced him to leave Solaiyur and move to the city. Lingaa repents his ways and understands the great sacrifices made by his grandfather for the public good.
