Mumtaz is a village girl whose family is killed in communal riots. She moves to Mumbai with her uncle, the only family member she has left. They are desperately poor and her uncle persuades her to become a bar girl at Chandni Bar. This is merely temporary, he promises, until he gets a job. Mumtaz is a shy girl who loathes the work, but she forces herself to dance and flirt. However, the uncle doesn't keep his promise; he lives on her earnings, drinking them away, and never gets a job. He adds one final, unforgivable crime to the list when he gets drunk and rapes her. By this time she has caught the eye of a gangster called Potiya Sawant. When she tells Potiya what her uncle did to her, Potiya decides to "defend her honor." Potiya shoots the uncle. Mumtaz, bereft of any male protection in the dangerous slums, marries Potiya. She is determined to make the best of things. She leaves the bar and stays home to raise her two children, whom she carefully protects from the world of prostitution and gangs. However, her world unravels again when Potiya is killed. She has to return to the bar to support her children. In the end, she cannot protect them from their sordid surroundings. Her son becomes a killer, her daughter becomes a bar dancer in her turn, and Mumtaz turns to prostitution in a tragic attempt to save her son. more»

Located in the backwaters of a dam, Sita Parvata is an island slowly submerging due to the rains. The government succeeds in evacuating the residents by giving them compensation for the properties they own. The village temple priest Duggajja, his son Ganapa, and his daughter-in-law Nagi find it impossible to leave their homeland and make a living with the meager compensation given by the government. They have but a small hut, which earns them a compensation of 25,000. In Ganapa's own words, the compensation can give them food and shelter, but cannot compensate for the love and respect of their people. On the island, they are important people, but outside, they would be one among hundreds of families struggling to make a living. Aravindan(Nedumudi Venu) is an assistant manager in a tea plantation in Munnar. He lives with his wife Janu (Saritha) and three daughters. They follow a happy life until he comes to know that he is affected by lung cancer. The doctor suggests him to move to Tata Institute for further treatment. He informs Mammukka (Thilakan) about the same and leaves for Bombay lying to his family that he has been promoted to a manager. Meanwhile, Dr. Surendran(Mammootty) shifts to Munnar as the family's new neighbor. The youngest daughter of the family, Rajani (Meena) acquaints with him and introduces him to her mother. The flashback shows a romantic relationship between Surendran and Janu where their marriage was fixed. Surendran meets with an accident and becomes impotent. He convinces Janu to leave him and marry someone else. The present life shows how Surendran becomes closer to the family. Rajini suffers from a heart problem and Dr. Surendran becomes a helping hand for the treatment. Aravindan's health worsens in Bombay and he asks Mammukka to inform his wife about his ill health. Aravindan has a helping hand called Shankhu (T.G. Ravi) in the hospital. Aravindan dies in the presence of Janu in the hospital. Shankhu threatens Janu about informing the kids about their father's death which could cause Rajini, the girl with the weak heart to die. Janu comes back to Munnar and pretends that Aravindan is recovering and does not tell her kids about the death. Shankhu visits her now and again blackmailing for gold and money. As the last sort, he takes away Janu's marital gold chain and threatens to return it back only if he is given ten thousand rupees. Surendran knowing all truth about Janu comes to her rescue and beats up Shankhu. He surrenders to the police saying that he murdered Shankhu. Hearing the news Rajini becomes unconscious. The court leaves Surendran on bail to operate Rajani. After he returns, he is been sent out jail as the police receive a complain that Surendran is innocent. Janu confesses to the CBI, who is now handling the case, that she had murdered Shankhu. She had done so because Shankhu had tried to rape her and to save herself she does so. Police arrest her, but the court leaves her considering her circumstances for the crime. The movie ends on a happy note. more»
